Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is compounding?
A. Prescription compounding combines an ageless art with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology. Specially trained pharmacists will work with your physician to prepare customized medications to meet your specific needs. The practice of compounding dates back to the origins of pharmacy. Within the last two decades, though, compounding has experienced resurgence, as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs.

Q. How does compounding benefit me?
A. Compounding offers several potential benefits. Some patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes in commercially available products. A compounding pharmacist working with your doctor may be able to compound a product containing the same active ingredient without the allergy-inducing dye or filler. With a physician’s prescription, a compounding pharmacist can change the dosage form of a medication to make it easier for the patient to ingest, or add flavor to it to make it more palatable. The pharmacist also can prepare the medication using several unique delivery systems, such as sublingual troches or lozenges, lollipops, or transdermal gels, which are helpful for those patients who have a difficult time swallowing a pill.

Q. What medications can be compounded?
A. Most medications can be compounded in some form. Compounded prescriptions are ideal for any patient requiring unique dosages and/or delivery devices. Examples of these are solutions, suspensions, suppositories, sprays, oral rinses, lipsticks, and transdermal gels. Compounding applications apply to many areas of medicine, including bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, veterinary, hospice, pediatric, dental, dermatology, chronic pain management, neuropathies, sports medicine, wound therapy, podiatry, and gastroenterology.

Q. Is compounding legal? Is it safe?
A. Compounding has been part of healthcare since the origins of pharmacy. Over the last decade, the resurgence of compounding has largely benefited from advances in technology, quality control and research methodology. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. In addition, state boards of pharmacy regulate compounding.

Q. Does my doctor know about compounding?
A. Prescription compounding is a rapidly growing component of many physicians’ practices. But in today’s world of aggressive marketing by drug manufacturers, some may not realize the extent of compounding’s resurgence in recent years. Pharmacy Solutions is committed to providing high-quality compounded medications in the dosage form and strength prescribed by the physician. Through the triad relationship of patient, physician, and pharmacist, all three can work together to solve unique medical problems.
