What compounding means to Physicians
Upon a prescription order, we can compound:
  • oral capsules and liquids
  • transdermal gels
  • lollipops
  • troches, tablet triturates and sublingual drops
  • suppositories and enemas
  • nasal preparations
  • topical creams, ointments, gels, powders and sprays
  • oral adhesives, mouthwashes, and rinses
  • lip balms
What are the advantages of prescribing a compounded product?

Capsules: Medications formulated in capsules enable the patient to get the exact dosage needed, while avoiding unwanted dyes and fillers.

Transdermal gels: Works well for patients who can’t swallow, and can be used to help reduce systemic side effects. In other words, can help patients obtain local effect with less likely chance of adverse effect. Common drug classes used in transdermals include: NSAIDS, anti-inflammatory agents, muscle relaxants, anti-nausea agents, anesthetics, antiviral agents, and anti-anxiety agents.

Troches: Can be made in gummy (good option for kids) or slow dissolve dosage forms (ideal for patients who have difficultly swallowing).

Suppositories: Helps patients who can’t swallow receive a required medication. Also helps achieve a rapid, local effect while preventing most first-pass metabolism. This dosage form can be effective for patients with hemorrhoids or irritable bowel syndrome.
